Finely illustrated edition of the Spanish Jesuit's immensely influential ascetic work, a discourse on the difference between the temporal and the eternal. The author bases his arguments on the Bible, historical example, the ancient philosophers (Aristotle, Seneca) and Christian asceticism as taught by St Augustine and St Bernard. Interspersed with his own philosophy are historical anecdotes and references to the value of symbolism. Juan Eusebio Nieremberg (c1585-1658), born in Madrid of German descent, was one of the most prolific Jesuit authors of this time. The present work, his bestknown, first published in Madrid in 1640, was chosen by the Jesuit General Tirso Gonzalez (1687-1705) to refute the heretic teachings of Laxism and Quietism. It contains striking illustrations of the horrors of hell awaiting sinners. It was very widely translated - a celebrated translation into Guarani was the first book printed in the Jesuit Missions in Paraguay (1705), which shows the importance attached to the text by the Order.
