8vo. viii, [9]-933, [1, blank] pp., engraved frontispiece of the author. Contemporary blue polished calf, second panel lettered in gilt on red morocco label, the rest elaborately panelled in gilt, covers attractively panelled in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers, marbled edges (neat contemporary gift inscription to front flyleaf, some spotting and offsetting to title page from frontispiece, small paper flaw just touching a few characters to p. 11-14 and again to pp. 681-2; light shelf wear to extremities, joint slightly rubbed, notwithstanding a very attractive copy). London, J.F. Dove. A handsomely bound early nineteenth century one-volume edition of 'the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought' (PMM). Originally published in 1776, 'The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry' (ODNB).
