Two volume set with five beautifully hand-coloured plates plus two Longman s Catalogues at end dated 1842. 8vo. Hardbacks. Small ownership label removed from ffeps. Minor spotting very largely restricted to blank margins o/w. contents fine. Original cloth boards with blind decoration, gilt lettering and motifs in thor. vg. condition. A very pleasing set of the sixth, corrected and enlarged, edition. Kirby and Spence , as the work came to be known, was very successful on its initial publication and sparked a fashion for entomology among amateur naturalists in the 1820s and 1830s. This increased popularity in the study of insects resulted in the foundation of the Entomological Society of London (now the Royal Entomological Society) in 1833.
