pp.vii, 164 with 11 copper engraved plates of which 9 are hand-coloured. Folio. Hardback. Minor ink mark to blank margin of one plate, only very minor spotting o/w. the magnificent plates are in fine condition as are the rest of the contents. More recently, very handsomely bound in brown half calf leather over marbled boards with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and blind tooling. Sewn headbands. Binding very gently sunned to spine o/w. in fine condition. One of the most beautifully illustrated books on shells. A study of the various families of molluscs, with a glossary of Latin terms, by Samuel Brookes, FLS (d.1838). It examines the taxonomic arrangements of the genera, by both Linnaeus and Lamarck (1744-1819), the great French naturalist and taxonomist, who made a study of invertebrate classification, including shells. Beautifully illustrated with hand coloured plates.
