XXIII., 226 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand, Universitätsbibliotheksexemplar / very good condition for the age - INTRODUCTION -- The present volume offers an English translation of the philosophical treatises of Isaac ben Solomon Israeli, the earliest Jewish Neoplatonist, comments on the texts, and a survey and appraisal of Israelis philosophy. -- The following are the philosophical works of Israeli studied in the present volume. (We have left aside his medical works, though a study of them might bring to light here and there some passage relevant to philosophy.) -- The first text included is that of the Book of Definitions, which is extant in medieval Latin and Hebrew translations, only a portion of it having survived in the Arabic original. -- The fragments of the Book of Substances are extant in an Arabic manuscript in the possession of the Leningrad State Public Library (a short portion also in a manuscript of the British Museum), and were published for the first time by one of the joint authors. -- The short Book on Spirit and Soul has been translated from the only available Hebrew version (except for a short passage extant in the original Arabic). -- The Chapter on the Elements is translated from a Hebrew version of the Arabic original, preserved in a manuscript of the Biblioteca Comunale di Mantova (Mantua) and erroneously ascribed to Aristotle. It was first edited by one of the joint authors. -- The only philosophical work by Israeli not included in this volume is the rather lengthy Book on the Elements which is extant in Latin and Hebrew versions and available in S. Frieds edition. It has been omitted both on account of its size and of the large amount of extraneous matter irrelevant to philosophy proper contained in it. Its contents, in so far as they have a bearing on Israelis philosophy, have been taken into account in Part II. Moreover, an extract which has special philosophical importance is included in translation. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550. Seller Inventory # 1175282
