Isaiah and Daniel in Bengali. Translated from the Original Languages by the Calcutta Baptist Missionaries.

Later edition of this translation by the British missionary William Yates (1792-1845), following its publication in an edition of the entire Old Testament in 1844. Yates's Bengali-language rendering of the Bible took a decade to complete. Yates arrived in Calcutta in 1815 and, excepting a short period of home leave, spent the remainder of his life in Asia. "As well as an orientalist, he was a deeply read classical scholar, a Hebraist, and a student of Chinese" (ODNB). Darlow & Moule 2079 (for Yates's complete Bengali Old Testament). Small octavo. Original green horizontally ribbed cloth, printed paper spine label, edges sprinkled red. Bookplate recording presentation of vol. to American Bible Union by Calcutta Baptist Missionaries in 1853; old paper shelf label on spine; 20th-century blind stamps of University of Chicago Library on title page and final leaf. Spine repaired; very good.
