Addressed to 'Dear old Boy' and 'old fellow', from 'Your Brother'. Knowles had become editor of the Contemporary Review in 1870, and he starts the letter by asking for Pedder's 'letter & address': 'the article on Famine & debt I value exceedingly & must run no risk of losing [Pedder, of the India Office, published an article on 'Famine and Debt in India' in an 1877 issue of the Nineteenth Century] - besides he was introduced to me by Sir Lewis Mallet & spoken highly of by Lord Salisbury'. 'Will you also tell me as nearly as you recollect what you said to him - did you say I was away or what? I ask that I amy "be in the same Sale" with you -'. The last page relates to 'the folks'.
