[Travel/Topography] THIRD EDITION IN FINE LEATHER BINDING. Octavo (23 x 14cm), pp.[4] xv [1] 442 [2]. With a folding map of the Hebrides facing pp.1. Contemporary brown calf boards, newly rebacked brown calf spine with original black gilt-lettered label. All edges speckled brown and red. Internally bright, gently spotted throughout. Small newspaper clipping adhered to rear pastedown. Various ownership signatures in black ink and three armorial bookplates to preliminaries, ex libris Sir Dyce Duckworth, Arthur Dyce Duckworth, and Edward H. Mainwaring Sladen. Top edge toned. Boards with heavy erosion/wear, spine as new, label gilt somewhat dulled. Very good. Preceding Boswell's longer work on the great 18th century thinker 'The Life of Samuel Johnson,' this travel memoir chronicling his and Johnson's tour of the Scottish isles provides not only topographical content but discussions of contemporary cultural issues such as the credibility of Ossian's poetry. Sir Dyce Duckworth (1840-1928) was a notable British surgeon. Seller Inventory # 73975
