Large 8vo. (25 x 17.5 cm.) pp.xxxi+296. Contemporary quarter red morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and compartments richly gilt decorated with floral motifs, top edge gilt. Text in French. A very attractive copy of this classic. The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian Sanskrit text that serves as a philosophical and practical manual on love, sexuality, and emotional fulfillment. Translated, "Kama" means desire or pleasure, and "Sutra" translates to thread or discourse. Thus, it literally means "Aphorisms of Love" or a "Book of Desire". E. Lamairesse (born Pierre-Eugène Lamairesse in 1817) was a prominent 19th-century French civil engineer, author, and orientalist scholar known for his historical and cultural studies on India. After retiring to France in 1878, he became a prolific polyglot, translator, and writer who introduced French audiences to South Indian literature, religion, and philosophy.
