George Edmonds, 1788-1868, radical teacher, scholar & lawyer, who was appointed first Clerk of the Peace for Birmingham. As a consequence of Edmonds' proposing in 1819 that Sir Charles Wolseley should be the representative of Birmingham, which had no M.P., and presenting a petition to parliament, he was incarcerated in Warwick Gaol for a year. Bentham takes up his case and condemns the use of the law to make it a punishable offence for anyone 'acting elsewhere than in parliament. towards the obtaining of any change in the representation of the people.'.
