8vo. 9 x 6.25 inches. xix + [i] + 227 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders on boards, enclosing pictorial gilt block on front board. All edges red. Extremities worn with loss near top of spine and wear to head and tail and to rear board. Both hinges cracking and some scattered spotting, largely confined to preliminaries; otherwise a very good clean interior. Name stamp of M. F. Delano on first free endpaper and title page. Illustrated by frontispiece and by 58 text figures. An illustrated study of childbirth practises among non-western peoples of the world. The sections include pregnancy, parturition and childbed, posture in labour (including standing sitting, squatting, kneeling, etc.), management of the afterbirth, massage, expression and other external manipulation and characteristic labour scenes in East Asia, Africa south of the Sahara and North America. The development of the obstetric chair is also discussed. George Julius Engelmann (1847-1903) was a US obstetrician and gynaecologist who studied in Europe before returning to his home city of St Louis in 1873 becoming Professor of Obstetrics.
