The contents of this selection of sixteen Later Stuart Tracts in the English Garner series, include original texts by Sir William Petty (1623-87), on Political Arithmetic (1690), a famous work on economics, which advocated the principle of 'laissez-faire,' by government; sixteen texts by Daniel Defoe (1697-1715), including The History of the Kentish Petition (1701), and five satirical texts featuring John Bull by John Arbuthnot (1712) These tracts were reprinted from the English Garner by Professor Edward Arber (1836-1912), with the addition of Defoe's Preface from The Review. Arbuthnot (1667-1735) was a physician and satirist, who was linked with Pope and Swift in the Scriblerus Club founded in 1714.
