About this Item
Large 8vo. 8 x 10.75 inches. xiv + 493 pp. Bound in quarter textured cloth over blue boards with printed paper spine label in dust wrapper. Deckled edges. Some light foxing, principally confined to edges; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by diagrams in text. Observations in the form of letters on life in England with numerous references to the Lincolnshire Fens. Gilbert Bernard (1882-1927) was a Lincolnshire playwright, novelist and war poet and writer in dialect. Among his works was the Old England series quoted, with reviews, in the preliminaries of this work. The introduction, by C. F. A. Lapelle of Massachusetts, however, seems to suggest a different identity for the author as Hugo Thorpe. Lapelle claims that Thorpe wrote the letters to him, 1913-14 and that he died in 1922 'after his year in rural England.' Certainly some of the letters are signed by Hugo Thorpe (and he quotes people addressing him as Mr Thorpe), but they also contain the observations on rural life in Lincolnshire which are characteristic of the work of Gilbert Bernard, whose independent existence seems to well established. We have been unable to trace any biography of either Thorpe or Gilbert by G. K. Chesterton. ART / LITERATURE LETTERS CORRESPONDENCE RURAL PURSUITS 20TH CENTURY ART / LITERATURE.
