Bien complet de ses deux volumes, d'une carte dépliante gravée in-fine du tome 2 (Tabula ad Expeditionem Cyri Adcommodata), et illustré de bandeaux et culs-de-lampe. Elaboré à partir d?une nouvelle traduction de l?Anabase de Xénophon et d?autres sources grecques, cet ouvrage relate l?expédition menée par Cyrus le Jeune, fils du roi de Perse Darius II, pour renverser du trône de Perse son frère aîné, le souverain achéménide Artaxerxès II Mnèmon, de 401 à 399 avant J.C. Sous le nom des « Dix-Mille », on désigne les 12 800 mercenaires grecs recrutés par Cyrus, qui réussirent l?exploit ? en dépit de nombreuses péripéties : trahisons, mort de leur chef, retraite forcée et mémorable jusqu?à Trébizonde, puis jusqu?en Thrace, hostilité des cités grecques, intégration finale dans l?armée du spartiate Thimbron ? de parcourir l?immense Empire perse bien avant sa conquête par Alexandre.
