Large 8vo. 10 x 6.25 inches. [4] + lxiv + 695 pp. Bound in contemporary maroon half morocco, gilt, over marbled boards. Extremities worn, some scattered top edge margin staining, and foxing, and occasional worming in margins. Last page of index torn and missing lower portion. Various cuttings and parts of articles pasted on to front pastedown and endpapers; also at rear. Frontispiece worn with edge stain extending on to edge of title. 1838 signatures of G. Gibbing of Boreham Hall (?) Essex, at several places in preliminaries and occasional writing inside. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by engraved figures in text. A systematic survey of farming and horticulture, with appendices of of calendars of work and useful tables. At the front is a Memoir of John Ellman of Glynde (1753-1832), famous Sussex livestock breeder, noted for Southdown sheep. John Baxter (1781-1858) was an agricultural writer and publisher (see Fussell for an account of his works). The first edition was published in 1830 and enlarged in 1832 and again for this Third Edition of 1834, a Fourth appearing under a different title in 1846. A worn copy with a good interior.
