Learning and Working: The Religion of Rome, and Its Influence on Modern Civilization (Classic Reprint)

Exploring how Rome’s religious heritage helped shape modern life—and what that means for education today.

This book gathers the ideas of Frederick Denison Maurice on how a living college, built from real relationships between teachers and workers, can transform learning and society. It invites readers to rethink who learns, who teaches, and how knowledge travels from the workshop to the wider world.

In these pages, Maurice argues for a practical, humane approach to education. He envisions working men and other skilled tradespeople taking active roles in a scholarly community, learning together while still practicing their crafts. The aim is to create a true fellowship of learning that binds teachers and students in mutual growth, beyond walls and traditional labels.

• Why a college can begin with real, working people rather than empty institutions.
• How teachers and learners strengthen one another through shared pursuit of knowledge.
• Concrete steps to connect learning with daily work in the factory and workshop.
• Why education should foster social unity and responsibility across class boundaries.

Ideal for readers of social philosophy, history of education, and reform-minded thought, this edition speaks to anyone curious about how learning can serve the common good.
