[James Cossar Ewart (1851-1933) was a Scottish zoologist known for his contributions to the field of biology, particularly in the study of genetics and heredity. He held the Chair of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh from 1882 to 1919. Ewart conducted research on the inheritance of acquired characteristics, a topic associated with Lamarckian evolution. His work focused on horse breeding and the transmission of traits. Ewart proposed the theory of "telegony," suggesting that offspring could inherit characteristics from their mother's previous mates. Ewart's experiments involved hybridizing horses and zebras to test his theories. Although his ideas were later discredited, his work played a role in the historical development of biological thought, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
