Limited edition, number 310 of 500 copies for sale and 20 for presentation signed by the publisher. Lockhart (1794-1854) first published his biography in 1828 as a volume in Constable's Miscellany. This edition features a new essay on Burns by the scholar Sir Walter Raleigh (1861-1922). 2 vols, octavo (217 x 137 mm). Frontispieces and 29 plates with captioned tissue guards. Late 20th-century blue morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe for Asprey, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered in gilt, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. A couple of scratches to leather, spots of foxing and toning to a few outer leaves, else clean. A near-fine set.
