Original small 4to. (22 x 18 cm.) brown cloth album , entitled Snap Shots to upper cover. Manuscript title and captions to the photographs. 47 albumen prints c.15 x 11 cm. each, mounted back to back on 24 leaves, comprising 12 of Wimbledon Common, 5 of Battersea Park 2 of Putney (Creek, and Towpath), 3 of Wandsworth, 1 of Fulham Palace, 5 of Kew Gardens, 2 of Wandsworth Town, 1 of St. Anne's Bazaar in Wandsworth, 16 of Kent, including Knole. A few marginal nicks and tears to the margins of the leaves not affecting the photographs which generally show rich tonality. Wonderfully evocative and rare collection of views of these South-West London suburbs and Kent. John Frederick Briggs (1871-1963) Born Richmond, Surrey, 5th December 1871 - the son of Thomas Briggs (1808-1892), retired factory owner, and his second wife Sarah Jane Breakell (1839-1919), who had married in 1868. Living at 70 St. Ann's Hill, Wandsworth, in 1891 - described as a chemistry student aged nineteen. Resident with his mother; two younger siblings; a cousin Edith Jane Breakell, and a couple of servants. Elected Fellow of the Chemical Society 1893. Living at 49 Wimbledon Park Road, Southfields, in 1901 - described as an analytical chemist (29). Resident with his mother, a cousin Edith J. Breakell, and a servant. He married the cousin at Lewisham later in 1901. Died at Derby 29 Jun 1963.
