Illustrated throughout by 100 plates, including 40 tipped in colour plates and by 35 text figures. Reprint of the first edition of 1956, a work based on the six volume Pageant of Japanese Art. The plates cover painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, lacquer ware, metalwork and architecture. The introductory survey, chronologically arranged, is by Charles Sanford Terry (1926-82), translator and academic specialising in Japanese culture.
