8vo, portrait frontispiece and pp. v, [iii], 298; rebound in modern cloth but preserving the original inscribed endpaper (see below); paper label on spine. A remarkable association copy. This is a presentation copy from the author, inscribed: 'Thomas Carlyle Esq. I dare say it wont interest but it is a note of admiration from the Author'. Apparently it didn't interest Carlyle all that much, because the verso of this leaf is inscribed in his hand: 'James Aitken, Dumfries, his Book: - 13 Novr. 1856 -'. James Aitken was Thomas Carlyle's brother-in-law, having married his sister Jean in 1834. Although Carlyle was unenthusiastic, the marriage was a success. Just a month before this book was given to Aitken, Carlyle wrote to his brother Alexander: 'Jamie is still gradually on the growing hand with his business - much given up to chemistry etc. and takes as much tobacco as ever' (3 October 1856). Presumably Carlyle thought that the gift of this book, the authorised biography of Dalton by an expert chemist, might inspire Jamie still further.
