Small folio. 8.75 x 10.75 inches. 6 + vii + [2] + 8-523 pp. + [1]. Bound in original half calf over marbled boards; rebacked using original spine, in compartments, decorated gilt with contrasting title label, gilt. Marbled edges and endpapers. Extremities worn and plates foxed as usual; otherwise a good copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece, engraved title with vignette and 10 engraved plates. The first two sections are concerned with the veterinary care of horses. Part III includes a historical survey of the English racehorse and famous owners, concluding with advice on breeding, purchase and feeding. Part IV is a systematic list of medicines. This first edition of 1838 is scarce; COPAC records only two copies, in the British Library and Glasgow.
