FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 5.75 x 8.75 inches. 365 + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt in pictorial dust wrapper, which has some small tears and edge wear. Extremities slightly worn and a little sunning of lower edge but otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by double page map, diagram and by 16 pages of black and white photographs. First published in Milan, 1964, the English edition is a slightly abridged version of the Italian one. An account of the author's travels in Mongolia, in three parts based on his interpreter, Aguan, Pulgin, a young shepherd who attaches himself to the author and his sister, Sayan, with whom he falls in love. Silvio Micheli (1911-90) from Viareggio, was an Industrial designer turned author who wrote on the Italian Resistance and the workers' struggle, most notably his novel, Pane duro, 1946.
