Large 8vo. 7 x 10 inches. [vi] + 465 pp. In brown paper wrapper with black titles. Extremities worn with splits at head and tail of spine; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 195 text figures, including maps. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. A detailed monograph on Cyrtandra, a conspicuous element in the wet forests of the Hawaiian mountains, which had long been known as one of the larger genera of higher plants, containing sixty four species, as well as varieties and forms. As a result of field work led by the author, eighty nine species from the island of Oahu were added, making a total of 159 in the Hawaiian Islands. The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Honolulu, founded in 1889, contains the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural artefacts and natural history specimens in the world. Harold St John (1892-1991), specialist in the field botany of Pacific Islands, was Professor of Botany at the University of Hawaii, 1929-58. During the war he led a scientific team to the rainforests of Colombia to collect additional supplies of cinchona bark needed to manufacture quinine. A scarce title.
