Description:
98 pages; with a color frontispiece of the leaves of the mulberry tree, a color plate of the silkworm and moth and various growth stages; and a black & white plate of various reels for carding the silk fibers, including J.H. Cobb's. This 'New Edition' was published as the result of the Legislature of Massachusetts requesting more copies, and the Congress of the U.S. also, after the initial run in 1831. Front endpapers with the small bookplate ex-libris of Parker Cleaveland and his signature opposite; laid-in the text are a couple of loose scrap-papers also in a 19th century hand with further identification of the book's plates. Parker Cleaveland (1780 - 1858) Bowdoin College educator and author of the first American textbook on mineralogy, whose ". life, correspondence, and works represent a window on American and European intellectual currents in the early nineteenth century, as well as offering insight on the maturing of American science and education during that formative period." (Kennard B. Bork in the ANB) Approx. 4 5/8" x 7 3/16" size; bound in printed paper covered boards, plain brown cloth spine.
