141 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Zustand: Bleistiftvermerk auf Vorsatz. Ansonsten im einwandfreien Zustand. / Condition: pencil note on endpaper. Otherwise in perfect condition. - Content: The investigation of all known manuscripts of Aeschylus tragedies undertaken in the present study solves some problems, which have hampered so far the adequate appraisal and use of the manuscript evidence in Aeschylus. I have proposed above all to clarify the interrelationship of the Aeschylean mss. and to eliminate the superfluous material. Then, it seemed necessary to seize the Byzantine recension and to separate it from the genuine "old" tradition. Within each branch of the manuscript tradition I had to pursue ramifications, to group kindred mss., and to attempt to establish stemmata of the respective groups. In this way we can arrive at a more adequate appreciation of the value and importance of single manuscript witnesses for an objective and comprehensive attestation of the Aeschylean text. Moreover, the results of this research will, I hope, clear the way for a future critical edition of the ancient scholia on Aeschylus, which we still lack. My present task was facilitated by the existence of a list of Aeschylean mss. compiled, with rich bibliographic data, by Herbert Weir Smyth ("Catalogue of the Manuscripts of Aeschylus," Harvard Studies in Classical Philology 44 [1933] pp. 1-62), which I have gratefully utilized to the greatest extent. I myself have collected photographic specimens of almost all Aeschylean mss., and in some cases even complete photostats or microfilms of the more important and interesting mss. In 1940, I was able to study the Vatican mss. during my stay in Rome. Beside my own photographic collection, I obtained copies of several photographs of Aeschylean mss. from the H. W. Smyth collection of the Harvard College Library, and was enabled to study Wilamowitz-Moellendorff s similar collection, placed at my disposal in 1938/9. There were cases in which I should like to have had some additional ms.-photographs to elucidate incidental questions which arose in the course of my investigation. But under the present circumstances it is difficult to obtain new material from European libraries, and I must wait until a more normal world situation will allow me to get some supplementary information. In the meantime, for the text evidence not covered by my photographic resources I had to recur to collations published by Vauvilliers, Schütz, Butler, Blomfield, Hermann, Wilamowitz. My heartiest thanks go to all libraries and persons which helped me continually, even under war conditions, with photographs and information especially to the Vatican Library. The present study was begun in Warsaw before September 1939, continued in 1940 in Rome and in Athens, and concluded in Ann Arbor in 1941/2. It gives me great pleasure to express here my deepest gratitude to the Rockefeller Foundation, through whose generosity I found a refuge in this country, and to the University of Michigan, which hospitably extended to me all facilities for completing my research.
