Sprent, Assistant Keeper and Superintendent of the Map Room of the British Museum.The 1506 world map of Giovanni Matteo Contarini, engraved in Florence by Francesco Rosselli, is among the earliest obtainable printed maps to depict the New World and the first known printed world map engraved on copper. Issued only fourteen years after Columbus's first voyage, it presents a remarkably modern vision of the globe, incorporating the latest Portuguese and Spanish discoveries while retaining important elements of classical geography. Long believed lost, the sole surviving example was rediscovered in the twentieth century and acquired by the British Museum in 1922, where it remains one of the great cartographic treasures of the Age of Discovery.
