Discussion, observation, interviewing, and photography are the elements on which my information rests. I employed no special technical field devices or schemes, although today I would certainly use some of them if I were to return for further research. If my data on Afikpo art seem rich, credit is due to the people there who helped me gather the information. My guide and interpreter on my first field trip, Nnachi Enwo, the son of a famous Mgbom village leader and a prominent individual himself, had a good friend, J. Chukwu Okoro, who lived in another compound of the community. I was introduced to him and we became friends. Discovering that he was a carver, I asked him to make some masks for me; while watching him work, I began to acquire an understanding of the Afikpo masquerade tradition. Chukwu was an expert on many of its aspects, and through his enthusiastic guidance and that of Nnachi Enwo, I gathered a great deal more information on Afikpo art than I had originally intended. .
