Worn blind stamped cloth, faded to brown color, black ink covers over call numbers on the spine, joints good, a little fraying at the corner tips and spine ends, 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches. 1860 owner's inscription on ffep, library bookplate (end paper) and ink name stamp (title page), recent owner's name in black marker on front paste-down. Engraved frontispiece of James Sterling, with tissue guard, foxed. 435 pages, publisher's catalogue, light foxing in the text. A few institutional stamps in the bottom margins and on the closed page edges. The author labored to rescue memories and records of Methodism in New Jersey in the period just before and after the American Revolution. He gathered up what he could find to put on record the Methodist story of those times. Includes about three chapters on the Revolutionary period.John Atkinson (1835-1897), b. Deerfield, NY; d. Haverstraw, NY; a Methodist minister best known for his hymn, "We Shall Meet Beyond the River." He was the pastor of several churches throughout his long ministry, including those of Newark and Jersey City in New Jersey. In addition to this history of Methodism in New Jersey, he was also the author of The Centennial History of American Methodism and The History of the Wesleyan Movement in America.
