The author emphasizes eliminating difficulties encountered when determining silica in the same sample as the other elements, which has proven particularly advantageous in the West Virginia Experiment Station laboratory. The methods outlined depend on the decomposition of the sample by means of hydrofluoric acid and are open to possible objections. However, the subsequent procedure permits appropriate corrections.
