Thomas Wharton, 1st Marquess of Wharton, 1648-1715, renowned for his debauched lifestyle; Macaulay wrote that 'his mendacity and effrontery passed into proverbs. Of all the liars of his time, he was the most deliberate, the most inventive. What shame meant he did not understand.'. John Hampden, 1653-1696, opposed Charles II and was arrested in 1683 for alleged complicity in the Rye House Plot, and in 1685 was again found guilty of treason for involvement in the Monmouth uprising. Twice avoiding the death penalty, he died in 1696 'by his own hand'. He is credited with coining the phrase 'Glorious Revolution'. Seller Inventory # 78215
