Original publisher's brown cloth boards, gilt lettered and decoratively stamped in black. Previous owner's name on ffep. Pages are toned, but clean. Twelve illustrated plates, including frontispiece. pp. 227, 74. Two epic poems. The first is a retelling of saga of Moses. The second recounts the history and conditions of the United States. Both written from a Christian perspective. The author was the Rev. Mark Gould (1811-1896), a native of Maine and graduate of Bowdoin College ('37). He was ordained a congregational minister in 1851 and preached at Andover, Standish, Monmouth, and Chichester (NH), before coming to Massachusetts. He had been associated with Ashburnham and then retired to Worcester. The first owner, whose name appears on the ffep, was Rev. Orange C. Bailey of Worcester, Massachusetts. At the time he was the pastor of that city's historic Summer Street Church (now known as Mission Chapel, located at 205 Summer St.). Seller Inventory # 014650
