Bookplate of the Earl of Macclesfield, and armorial blindstamp on the first two leaves. FIRST EDITION of Douglas?s first book, which became a standard work for a large part of the eighteenth century. ?He was throughout his life a laborious student of everything relating to his profession, but was most distinguished as an anatomist? (DNB). He practised midwifery, hence, presumably, the special section on the muscles of women. Russell 266. A variant exists with ?for G. Strachan? rather than ?for George Strahan? in the imprint.
