8vo. 10 x 6.25 inches. x + [ii] + 216 pp. Bound in pictorial cloth, gilt. Spine sunned and small lower corner stain in centre of book; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 12 drawings by John Piper, including frontispiece. Map endpapers. The first Folio Society edition of the classic work of literature and natural history by Gilbert White (1720-93), which has never been out of print since its first appearance in 1789. Written in the form of letters addressed to Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington. Edited by Walter Sidney Scott (1900-80) and illustrated by the artist, John Piper (1902-92). Founded by Patrick Marrin's father George in 1946, Marrin's Bookshop has been based in its current Folkestone location since 1963. Patrick has worked in bookselling since 1970. As well as rare antiquarian books, maps and prints, the stock includes a wide range of literature, library sets, travel, history and illustrated books in all fields.
