Small 8vo. 7.5 x 5 inches. v + [i] + 121 pp. Bound in original rd cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper, which has has edge chips and small missing section at top edge of front wrapper. Slight damp staining of boards, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by 6 black and white photographic plates, including frontispiece. Seventh impression in the year of first publication of the 1949 broadcast talks by controversial astronomer, Fred Hoyle (1915-2001). In this influential book, which appeared in many later editions and translations, Hoyle examines the earth and nearby space, the sun and the stars, and their origin and evolution and that of the Earth and solar system, and man's place in the expanding universe. Here Hoyle states:' In the older theories all the material in the Universe is supposed to have appeared at one instant of time, the whole creation process taking the form of one big bang. For myself I find this idea very much queerer than continuous creation.' (p.105). Ironically Hoyle had coined the now universally adopted phrase, 'Big Bang,' for a concept that he opposed, favouring his 'Steady-State' theory of the continuous creation of matter.
