Add to basket8vo. 9 x 6 inches. vii + [i] + 149 + [1] pp. Bound in original red cloth with yellow titles, in pictorial unclipped dust wrapper, which has edge wear and chips, including at head and tail of spine. Some sunning of boards and light foxing of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good clean copy. 1944 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 47 pages of black and white photographs, including frontispiece, and sketches, all by the author. Account of his 1942 wartime visit to the near east by Cecil Beaton (1904-80), photographer and designer. His mission included taking photographs for the Air Ministry and Ministry of Information. He visited Cairo, Alexandria, the Western Desert, Jerusalem, Iran, Iraq and Syria (and Lisbon on the way home); his subjects included British H.Q. and commanders, servicemen, military equipment, including tanks, aircraft and wrecked enemy planes, local people, ruling families and scenes of everyday life. 1943 reprint in the year of first publication.
