Alessandro Verri (1741 - 1816) scrisse la prima parte dell'opera nel 1782, pubblicando poi l'edizione definitiva del 1804.Lo scrittore trova ispirazione dalle iscrizioni sepolcrali collocate sulle tombe dell'antica famiglia patrizia romana degli Scipioni (ritrovamento avvenuto nel corso del 1780 a Roma nelle vicinanze della via Appia).Nella prima parte della storia immagina di incontrare gli spiriti degli antichi romani, guidati da Cicerone, e di parlare della grandezza e della decadenza delle civiltà, di istituzioni, di leggi e di religione.
