[912]pp. 8vo. Some worming to upper fore-edge of final section affecting a few letters on each page of 19 leaves. Contemp. panelled calf, red morocco label; some expert repair to hinges. A nice copy. Alston V 152; ESTC T113317, Birmingham, BL & NLW only in UK; 9 copies in North America. Thomas Dyche was an English schoolmaster from Derbyshire. First published in 1735 (his dates are unknown but it is thought he died between 1733 and 1735) his New General English Dictionary was in print until the end of the eighteenth century. O'Neil notes that although their dictionary 'offered little new', Dyche and Pardon were 'successful largely because they addressed themselves to the neglected audience of the less educated'. Priced at six shillings, it certainly was not cheap. From the third edition onwards, it incorporated the names and descriptions of hundreds of English and Welsh towns, with their market-days, government, manufactures, and distances from London.
