Clear and accurate map of early nineteenth century England and Wales. Two scales and title at top right. John Cary was considered 'the most representative, able and prolific of English cartographers'. Tooley says, 'As an engraver he was elegant and exact with fine clear lettering and great delicacy of touch'. When the Ordnance Survey began accurately mapping the United Kingdom, they used John Cary's style as the basis for their work. Copper engraving. Very good condition. Original colour. Map dimensions 57 x 48 cm, overall dimensions 59.5 x 52 cm. Folding map of England and Wales. Original colour in block and outline. Scale: 20 miles to one inch. The map dissected into 15 sections and mounted on linen, folds into old dark green marbled paper slipcase with printed title label to upper board. Slipcase worn, spines deteriorating.
