About this Item
Folio (32 x 20cm). Four parts in two volumes, published 1769-71. Comprising the first reprint in folio of the original 46 numbers, Wilkes being famously commited to The Tower for number XLV. The continuation here, the second distinct one, neither of which written by Wilkes, parts XLVII through CCXVIII, is in the original folio numbers (occasionally showing signs of original folding) bound with the requisite titles, indices &c. The periodical was no longer published separately in numbers after issue CCXVIII. 'The name of Wilkes, whether we choose it or not, must be enrolled among the great champions of English Freedom'- The Private Library, quoting Gladstone. Vol. I, [iv],163,[5],vi,cxi,[1],279-614,ii; Vol II, pp. [ii],320,[ii],321-742. Complete, despite the erratic pagination. Bound in contemporary full calf, the hinges cracked, but a tight & clean copy with some rubbing to the head & tail of spine & boards, the board corners a little worn. Title & first two leaves of Vol. II with a small worm-track, neat 1932 ownership inscription & stamp to front fep. Internally excellent. [Pargellis & Medley 134; Kress 6666 & 6667; CBEL II, 1283; Crane & Kaye 632; The Private Library 6th Ser. Vol. I, 4; Hope 333-337].
