The second edition, 'revised and enlaged.' Octavo (21.5 x 14.5cm). pp. xvi,221,[3]. A signed presentation copy, inscription in ink of the endpaper in Nightingale's hand to 'the Probationers of St Marlebone Infirmary Dec 1884'. The infirmary for the sick poor was opened in 1881, its nursing practice inspired by Nightingale, its architect Henry Snell having received a letter of congratualtion from her. Smudged at top & bottom of the inscribed leaf. The volume in the publisher's pebble-grained cloth, gilt, split & separated down the spine, the cloth worn, some leaves a little proud, but a sound copy.
