Collection of costume plates measuring 9" x 6¼" comprising 1 uncoloured stipple engraved port frontis., 41 hand coloured plates including 1 double page. Some light browning, some plates with faint stab holes to fore-edge, marbled e.ps., ex.-libris R.M. Darnell of Darlington, inner gilt dentelles, original gilt lettered blind and gilt tooled morocco, intricate gilt motifs to spine, some scuffing and wear to extremities and spine with sl. loss to head and tail, a.e.g. Index to British Military Costume Prints 1500-1914 335. Gentleman s Magazine of Fashions 1828-1894. This series has hitherto been considered to comprise mainly the 35 col plates after W. and Henry Heath, 1828-32, showing figures of Regimental Officers. Even within this period, however, there were other plates of costume interest not by Heath and in the succeeding 60 years many others were published. The complete list of British and Foreign military costume plates is therefore published here. As confusion in numbering the original plates occurred, and some were given duplicate numbers, this list has been printed in order of date of publication. Our plates corresponding to the aforementioned list are numbers 1-6, 8-11, 13-22, 24-29, 31-36, 39-40, 42-45, 47-48, 53, 56. Apparently the average size print was 7¼ x 5¼. US$1073.
