8vo. 8 x 5 inches. viii + 126 + [1] pp. Conversation in a Railway Carriage, p. 80-126, continues pagination and register. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders on boards. Deckled fore edge. A little wear to extremities, small damp stains on lower edges of boards and foxing of rear flyleaf; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by initials and by publisher's device on title page. A study of organisation and efficiency in the conduct of public and private life. The second edition in the year of first publication. Sir Arthur Helps (1813-75) was educated at Eton and Trinity, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Cambridge Apostles Group. He served as a political private secretary and was appointed Clerk of the Privy Council in 1860. He opposed slavery and was an early advocate of animal rights. The banking crisis of 1866 and the failure of his brickworks and its railway link, led to the enforced sale of his Hampshire estate the following year. He was consequently provided with accommodation by Queen Victoria for whom he had carried out editorial work. Helps wrote on the history of Spanish America, the conquistadors and the treatment of the native population by the Spanish.
