133 + [1] blank + [10] catalogue ‘Library of Historical Tales', illustrated frontis, hardcover, pictorial pink brown cloth, gilt title label, Provenance: gift presentation label inside front cover to ‘George Sandiforth, for Attendance Meanwood Band of Hope, 1900’, very good condition, T. Nelson and Sons, London, 1892. * the author was the leader of the British pacifist organisation, The Peace Society, in the run up to World War One. The Band of Hope, a temperance organisation for working-class children, was founded in Leeds in 1847. All members took a pledge of total abstinence and were taught the "evils of drink". Members were enrolled from the age of six and met once a week to listen to lectures and participate in activities.
