Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece, by 2 other engraved copperplates after paintings by John Martin, by 33 wood engraved text figures and by facsimile of handwriting, Decorated by title page vignette. Edition of the Pilgrim's Progress with a life of John Bunyan by Robert Southey (1774-1843). Earlier a radical poet of the romantic school, Southey later developed as a literary scholar, historian and historical biographer, famous for his life of Nelson. It prints a poem by Bernard Barton (1784-1849), the Quaker poet and friend of Southey, Lines on Seeing the Portrait of John Bunyan, Engraved for this Work, [after W. H. Watt], a tribute to the impact made by this attractively illustrated John Murray edition, emphasising the status of The Pilgrim's Progress as a great work of English literature, as well as a text of popular piety. It includes two copperplates after John Martin (1789-1854), famous as a dramatic painter of religious art. The owner of this copy may have been ' Rev Roger Clough of Denbigh; a distinguished ecclesiastic who was Rector of Llansannan, Vicar of Corwen, Canon of St Asaph, and a magistrate who also gained an enviable reputation as a visionary agriculturist' (Bathafarn Hall website).
