All edges gilt. A little wear to extremities and light sunning of spine; otherwise a very good clean copy. 1863 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece, after Sir Thomas Lawrence, and by numerous steel engraved vignettes in text after Stothard, Turner, etc. Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) was a poet, banker and London literary host, who had travelled in Italy in 1814 (interrupted by Napoleon's escape from Elba) and 1821. The first part of Italy was published in 1822 and the second in 1828. It was not a commercial success until Rogers commissioned this illustrated version by Turner and Thomas Stothard (1755-1834), the first Moxon edition being published in 1830. It was followed by this edition of the Poems in 1830, similarly illustrated, which contains an introductory Life of Samuel Rogers. Famous in his time, Rogers was invited to succeed Wordsworth as Poet Laureate but declined and his reputation as a poet has not survived like his fellow Romantic colleagues.
