12mo. 4.5 x 7.25 inches. viii + 380 pp. Bound in contemporary decorative brown calf, with blind stamped borders enclosing block; spine in compartments with raised bounds, decorated by blind stamping with contrasting title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Some wear to extremities and a little foxing largely confined to flyleaves and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. 1859 inscription on verso of first free endpsper. A religious novel, featuring the fictitious Arthur Ridley, in which he and his friend and fellow college student, Herbert, engage in dialogues on matters of theology; in which the author is presumably expressing his own views. William Gresley (1801-76) was a high churchman, a populariser of the Tractarian movement after 1833, and prolific author on theology. Educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, he served at Lichfield, Brighton and Boyne Hill, near Maidenhead. THEOLOGY/HISTORY NOVELS LIT.
