8vo, pp. v, [i], 16; 99; with a few musical illustrations in the text; a little spotted in places; in modern boards. First and only edition. This text is by Anselm Bayly (1717/18-94), who was prominent in the world of liturgical music in London for some forty years: on the title page here he advertises himself as sub-Dean of the Chapel-Royal. He suggested that oratory and music were closely allied, and this collection of essays outlines his thinking on that and other matters. It was also issued, in the same year, under a different title, The Sacred Singer ESTC appears to imply that they are different works, but they must be the same work, perhaps with the cancellation of the dedication to Queen Charlotte, present in this issue. New Grove (seeming to imply that this version is the reissue) comments: 'In these didactic works Bayly embraced certain contradictory facets of both the syllabic and the accentual systems of prosody and attempted to establish general guidelines for regulating the prosody of orator and poet as well as musician'.…
