12mo. 384 pp. Backed in black leather with embossed cloth boards; a fairly solid copy with some light fraying at the spine ends and corners and rubbing at the joints. Contemporary name and address on the front free endpaper and stamp on the preface; another inscription has been abraded away on the front pastedown. A clean copy. This dictionary primarily focuses on pronunciation, as definitions are a typically only a few words long. In the first half of the 19th century, Worcester was the principle competitor to Noah Webster. They differed with regards to pronunciation, Worcester espousing a belief that the traditional pronunciation was recommended rather than Webster's insistence on Americanizing the pronunciation.
