Mr. Freedberg deals at length with the major figures Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Fra Bartolommeo, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Peruzzi in analyses of individual works of art and considera-tions of individual personalities. The first historian of the High Renais-sance to treat the subject in such great detail and the first to be concerned with the relations among various events of art, Mr. Freedberg progresses from discussion of the single works to penetrating observa-tions relating these particular works of art to far-reaching developments in style and culture. He also examines the con-tributions of minor painters in the same period, and describes the accomplishment of the innovators of Mannerism, Pon-tormo, Rosso, and Berruguete. Mr.
